Former Owner of Stan’s Fish Sandwich, Stanley Gentle, Dies

From Stan’s Fish Sandwich Facebook page

Once upon a time, St. Matthews was home to one of Louisville’s favorite fish places, Stan’s Fish Sandwich. The former restaurant’s Facebook page posted this week that owner Stanley Gentle has died at 78.

He also owned St. Matthews Seafood Co., and the businesses served the neighborhood’s — and the city’s — craving for seafood for three decades. Stan’s closed in 2011, however in subsequent years, Gentle and his wife Lelia would serve the signature, peppery fish sandwiches at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in LaGrange during Lent. Before starting his food businesses, Gentle was a pastor.

I personally remember Stan’s Fish Sandwich as a place that was always bustling and always filled with smiling people. Sometimes you had to wait a bit for your sandwich and it could be tough to find a seat in the small space, but it was always worth the visit.

Gentle’s full obituary can be found here.
