Kentucky Derby Museum to Feature New ‘Derbyville’ Exhibit, Starting Nov. 19

The Kentucky Derby Museum will be host to a new exhibit about the annual event that began in 1875: Welcome to Derbyville. Here’s the announcement the museum shared …

Spectators climbing the Infield’s flagpole. A skydiver surprising 100,000 fans with a parachute landing into the Infield crowd. Soon you will be able to explore the wild stories and unique culture of the Kentucky Derby at our new exhibit, Welcome to Derbyville, opening November 19.

The exhibit's concept was born from the idea that most years on Derby Day, Churchill Downs transforms into Kentucky's third-largest city, drawing its temporary residents into a remarkable cultural experience that is unique to other sporting events.

The unique culture of the Kentucky Derby will come to life through pictures, videos, artwork, and artifacts, plus interactive components where visitors can leave their own Derbyville stories.

Additionally, the exhibit will take a deep dive into journalist Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman's raucous commentary, "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved," featuring some familiar (and NEW) artifacts from their trip to the 1970 Kentucky Derby. The Museum is bringing to its guests several objects from the vault that have never been displayed.

Some highlights:

  • Artifacts from Hunter S. Thompson and artist Ralph Steadman's trip to 1970 Kentucky Derby

  • Artist Joe McGee’s series of sketches and studies walking around Churchill Downs on race days

  • Playful “Derby or Bust” Conestoga wagon used by fans in the infield in the 90s

  • Cora Jacobs’ colorful ensemble worn to the hundredth anniversary of the Kentucky Derby in 1974

The exhibit will be located in the Matt Winn Theatre on the second floor of the museum.
