Mile Wide Beer Company Announces Collaboration Beer with Queer Kentucky
Mile Wide Beer Company announced the release of Dorothy’s Riot, a beer brewed in collaboration with Queer Kentucky, on Friday, June 3. Dorothy’s Riot is a 6% ABV India Pale Ale, brewed with Citra & Enigma hops. Mile Wide worked with Queer Kentucky, Louisville Pride Foundation, and various members of the LGBTQ+ community to develop the name and recipe of the beer.
The label for this year’s beer was designed by local artist Andy Aliaga-Mendoza, who said, "I wanted to convey the sweetness and lightness of trans youth in this. The colors (save for the outline black) are colors of the trans flag and the composition is laid out so the colors fall where the flag would. The pink balloons are flying upward as a symbol of the unlimited potential trans youth have so long as we support them. People tend to fly balloons into the air like this to either memorialize someone or to celebrate something and I feel like with this beer we're trying to do both, especially in a year with the anti queer legislation in Kentucky and the proper backlash it’s gotten."
As part of the release, Mile Wide will host an all-day Pride event at their Louisville Taproom. The event will include:
Various LGBTQ+ Vendors & Organizations
Volunteers of America offering free & confidential HIV testing
Queer DJs spinning throughout the day
Drag Show @ 7:00pm
Louisville Silent Disco from 9:00pm-Midnight
Dorothy’s Riot will be released at the event, on draft and in 4 packs of 16oz cans. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the beer will go to Queer Kentucky.
Scott Shreffler, co-founder of Mile Wide, said they were excited for year two of this collaboration. “Last year’s party was epic, to say the least,” he said in a news release. “It far exceeded our expectations and got us excited to make this an annual event at the brewery.”
Spencer Jenkins, Founder & Executive Director of Queer Kentucky, added, “We’re so happy to partner with Mile Wide on this event. Due to COVID, Pride last year AND this year have been so weird. We’re just grateful that Mile Wide is holding space for the LGBTQ+ community during Pride month.”
