In collaboration with Monnik Beer Company and Heine Brothers’ Coffee, TEN20 Craft Brewery today released its 100th batch of beer, a limited-release coffee blonde ale named Lifted Sun.

Lifted Sun is 5% ABV and is dry-beaned with Heine Brothers’ natural processed coffee from the Sidama region of Ethiopia and whole Madagascar vanilla beans. The resulting beer is duly complex, described as having “coffee showing strongly on the nose, and notes of candied fruit, wine, vanilla, and dark chocolate on the palate,” per a news release from the brewery.

“The partnership began through my friendship with Monnik’s brewer, Kaleb Petrella, who splits his time between the brewery and Heine Brothers’, one of Louisville’s oldest and most recognized names in coffee roasting,” said Larry Horwitz, head of brewing operations at TEN20. “To me, Lifted Sun embodies our mission of Bringing People Together for Good – it’s a beer we love, featuring fair trade and organic ingredients we love, alongside local people we love.”

Heine Brothers’ organic fair trade Natural Ethiopia Sidama is sourced from the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU), which represents smaller cooperatives and more than 76,000 individual farmer families. The natural coffee is handled with the fruit on for the drying stage of processing. The whole cherries dry in the sun for weeks until the desiccated skin resembles fruit leather, which leads to the big-bodied flavors that complement the golden ale so well.

“On a personal level, this collaboration is important to me because the beer I most wanted to brew at a commercial scale since I began in the industry was a coffee blonde,” said Petrella. ”To team up with the folks at TEN20 to create Lifted Sun was an outstanding experience and I believe the product speaks for itself.”

The limited release is available on tap at TEN20 Craft Brewery in Butchertown and Monnik Beer Company in Schnitzelburg while supplies last. For more information follow @TEN20Beer on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
