The Back Door Abruptly Closes

The Back Door, a Louisville favorite for nearly four decades, announced on social media today that it has closed its doors for good.

In the announcement on Facebook, the closing is at least in part attributed to the passing of long-time owner John Dant last October. The post referred to him as “the glue that held the Back Door together.”

It continued, “He was the perfect go-between, an incredible listener, and an experienced (and self-taught) business owner.”

The bar, located in the back corner of Mid-City Mall, was known for its affordable and strong cocktails, pool tables and everyone-is-welcome atmosphere. The Back Burner Grill often didn’t get its proper due, with daily specials and its better-than-average bar food, from the wings to the Back Burner Bombers. A plate of nachos could feed an entire table of people.

“The community we have fostered in that time is diverse and close-knit, and we are appreciative to all of you for what you've done for us,” the post reads. “… We tried to pick up the pieces and keep the business running as best we can, but not all dreams can be reality. It's thanks to you amazing folks that we were able to stay open as long as we were, and we are forever thankful to you for that.”

It concludes with wishing that long-time patrons “will keep your fond memories and share them with those that you love moving forward. It has been an amazing legacy to uphold for even these past few months.”
